About Retaining Walls
A retaining wall holds back soil so you can have level ground on a sloped yard, a raised garden or a driveway cut into a hill. It carries a lot of weight, especially when the soil behind it is wet, so it has to sit on a solid base with drainage behind it.
When a retaining wall starts to lean, bulge or crack, it’s usually because water is building up behind it or the base has shifted. A small wall can sometimes be reset and repaired. A wall that’s failing usually needs to be rebuilt properly so it doesn’t happen again.
Signs Your Retaining Wall Is Failing
- The wall is leaning forward or bulging in the middle
- Cracks, or blocks and stones that have shifted or fallen out
- Soil washing out from under or around the wall
- Water pooling behind the wall or seeping through it
- Gaps opening between the wall and the ground above it

Common Questions
My wall is leaning. Can it be fixed?
Sometimes a section can be rebuilt. If the whole wall is failing, it may need to be replaced. Joseph will look at it and tell you which.
Why is my retaining wall leaning?
Most often it’s water. When water can’t drain from behind the wall, the soil gets heavy and pushes the wall forward. Proper drainage behind the wall is a big part of a lasting fix.
Do I need a permit for a retaining wall?
Taller walls and walls near a property line can need one, depending on your city. Joseph can tell you what to check for your job.
